She served as AD for the first drug to transform AIDs from a deadly disease to one you can live with. Her vivid visual stories educated professionals on fascinating pathways being explored in organ rejection and outwitting cancer.

She has created numerous global and US award-winning campaigns over her 25 years as an agency creative. The major impact we make collectively in helping people towards wellness is her motivation. The only thing that drives her more in her work is today's continuously evolving digital space, which allows interactivity between people and brands to soar to incredible levels of engagement.

Helen worked on brands that convinced the nation a yellow nail is really an infection via a little yellow critter, gave anesthesiologists new precision in monitoring sleep, a smart gel that has the effect of a surgical clamp, a weekly pill to replace daily injections, and medicines that reverse disease. She is wild about the transformative nature of medicine.

With numerous awards at L&G, ICC, HLG and now H4B she is a frequent member of national and international juries. As a trustee for Catapult College 5 years running, she develops creative training curricula designed to benefit the staff and various local charities. Tim Hawkey

Managing Director/Executive Creative Director, Area 23, USA

Born into an advertising family, Tim Hawkey spent the first 22 years of his life trying to avoid a life in advertising. He may have failed miserably at that, but he’s made up for it with a meteoric, award-winning career.

Hawkey cut his teeth building healthcare megabrands at Grey Healthcare Group and Havas Life. For the past 12 years, he’s made FCB Health his home, the last three of which he has spent leading sister agency Area 23 and establishing it as a creative force in the industry.

“Do what scares you”, Hawkey espouses to his teams. He believes that a great creative idea should challenge the customer, and the clients, even if that means implementing a little shock and awe from time to time. “If they don’t stop and notice you, then everything you’re doing is just a waste of time”.

It’s this drive to push the limits that has brought so much attention to the work of Tim and his teams, who have brought in dozens of accolades from the Manny’s, the Global Awards, the RX Club and the Clios. Most notably, his 2009 initiative Live in My Skin took home the Grand Global, Grand Clio, Med Ad News Best Disease Awareness Campaign, and helped FCB Health win Med Ad News Most Creative Agency for 2010.

In his free time Tim likes to practice photography and guitar, and is trying desperately to become a semi-competent surfer.

Mikkel Jønsson

ECD Reputation (Publicis), Kopenhagen, Denmark

Mikkel had dark hair in 2001 when he co-founded Publicis/REPUTATION. After 13 years in charge of the creatives his hair is more or less grey….but the agency is now the most award-winning Nordic agency within healthcare. The international awards, like Clio Healthcare and Global Awards, have mainly been achieved within films, integrated campaigns, digital, graphical design and events.

For the last 16 years he has been developing global and local campaigns for both OTC and Rx-products across all media….while answering text messages from his very patient wife asking if he planned to get home anytime tonight. The client list has included Pfizer, Takeda, Lundbeck, Sanofi-Aventis and Astellas.

He started his advertising career as a copywriter at McCann focusing on FMCG before he moved on to McCann Healthcare - and then joined a local Danish agency where he met his future Publicis/REPUTATION partners.  He is (as far is he knows) the only Creative Director in the world with a banking education. He left the bank at the age 21 after he discovered that banks have no room for creativity – well, not his kind, anyway – and moved on to have his mind seriously expanded by the antics of co-workers at Danish National newspaper Politiken. He also holds a master degree in sales, marketing and management from Copenhagen Business School.

Diana Janicki

Executive Creative Director, TBWA/Paling Walters, UK

As a creative director with 15 years focused primarily on digital media, I've championed immersive brand experiences at some of the UK’s top digital and integrated marketing agencies. These include Agency.com, DLKW, Iris, RAPP, Publicis, and Tribal DDB.

I’ve lead global web developments for many of the world’s top brands, including British Airways, Bacardi, Barclays, Dulux, Nintendo, Orange, Unlilever and Philips to name a few. I have also worked on mother and baby brands like Nestle Brand vision and a Pampers mobile app.

Before joining TBWA, I worked for the Barclays banking group. Big data, social media, and multi channel digital services are an increasingly powerful landscape and I enjoyed the challenge of keeping up with the technology and innovation that’s possible.

After many years working in the consumer sector, healthcare fascinates me, and I look forward to working on more of the brands that are transforming what health and wellbeing can mean for all of us.

Jason Kilgour

Creative Director, Hammond & Thackeray, Australia

Most of my career has been spent working on the consumer side of advertising with clients ranging from banks to beer. Recently my role also ventured into creating new revenue streams and innovations for clients including the first cross category alcohol brand in Australia.

A few years back I had the wonderful opportunity to switch to the healthcare industry. What has taken me my surprise is the opportunity to tackle real issues, dealing with real people in an emotion filled category. Now as the Creative Director of H&T Melbourne I’m fortunate to create solutions in this progressive healthcare industry.

Terry Lawrence

VP/Creative Director, Discovery USA

Over the course of Terry’s career, he’s worked hard to solidify his reputation as a reliable and affable professional whose creative product makes meaningful differences for the brands he’s worked on and the agencies he’s worked for. As a VP, Creative Director at Discovery USA, Terry employs a customer-first approach to everything he does with the goal of identifying appropriate solutions based on the specific challenge at hand. He specializes in elevating brands by delivering differentiating and consistent brand experience across channels and audiences.

Selwyn Learner

Founder & Creative Director, LAB (Learner Adams Bones) UK

After a number of agencies including WCRS Healthcare, Paling Walters and Bates, I became CD at Ogilvy Healthworld across both domestic and global brands. I held that post for about nine years, then, a few years ago I founded Learner Adams Bones. I know that an original thought is the driving force behind great work, and that channels and technological platforms are the servant. But I also believe whole-heartedly that great creative insight drives brilliant ideas at every level, from visual to experiential, and doesn't simply embrace the newest technology, but actually shapes it. Above all though, we are in the business of changing minds and behaviours. Of persuasion, pure and simple.

Frank Mazzola

SVP, Group Creative Director, GSW Worldwide, NY, USA

Frank Mazzola has always had a simple philosophy on healthcare advertising: If sneakers and sports drink campaigns can make you feel something, what’s our excuse? In his words, “We work on brands that are literally life changing. If we can’t make that interesting and exciting, we’re thinking about it wrong.”

Since getting his start in 2003, as a junior copywriter at FCB, Frank has led by example – quickly becoming a creative leader in the industry. His work is, and has always been, rooted in human insights – with a strong aversion to overly complicated metaphors and “one-off” ideas. Recent work has been recognized by national TV audiences, and by the healthcare advertising industry for its creative merit – winning various awards, including as Clios, Globals, and Mannys.

Frank has also been a featured speaker at the 2013 DTC National Convention, and his Manny nominee videos for GSW are typically a bright spot of the event – and known, and anticipated, throughout the industry. He looks forward to seeing the great creative work at this year’s Global Awards.

Jacqui Mendelssohn

Regional Creative Director, McCann Health, South Africa

Jacqui is the Regional Creative Director of McCann Health in Johannesburg, South Africa.

After an interesting first incarnation as a Kruger National Park specialist guide, Jacqui has built up experience in the communications business that spans some 20 years and several global agencies.

From a strong above the line background where she won many awards across the full spectrum of product categories, Jacqui found herself operating in the “health sector” almost by accident. In a sense it was only her realisation that her love and passion for animals could in fact be extended to human beings that made her new career path viable.

Making a real difference in people’s lives gives a reward that clearly supersedes the mere upward motion of a sales graph. A fact that has even more poignancy in Africa where wellness is sometimes simply a luxury.

Jacqui believes passionately that it is insights into human nature that can make a big difference when trying to effect behaviour change. She also believes that those insights are valid across a global stage and that it is the commonality of the human condition that allows us to create communications that gel across many different cultures. Applying localised knowledge gives those insights credibility and traction.

Sinead Murphy

Deputy Creative Director, ICC-Lowe, UK

I fell into healthcare accidentally over 15 years ago and never sought to leave.

After a few years in Dublin I moved to Sydney for 8 years and worked on a broad portfolio of brands from consumer to ethical including 3 of the top 6 pharmaceutical brands in Australia: Lipitor, Somac and Seretide.

In 2008 Milan was my next port of call, where I worked on a range of global and Pan-European brands in the role of Creative Director. We launched and revitalised brands for Pfizer, Bayer, Janssen, Novartis and Abbott among others. We picked up a few awards along the way, but more importantly we created effective campaigns to build momentum for the brands.

I relocated to London this year and am finding this to be an exciting time to be in the industry as the creativity in this particular sector feels like it is really on the up. Healthcare is such a specialised and rewarding business to work in, and I am enjoying the surge of ideas in the expanding areas of communication now available to us.

And in all that time I have never lost my Irish accent. Sure why would I?

SVP, Senior Creative Director, Harrison and Star, USA

The summer after graduating from college, after weeks of pondering what to do with his freshly minted English B.A., Mike stumbled across a job listing for a “medical writer.” At the time, he couldn’t really conceive of what that might be. Or even believe that such a thing could exist. But he loved to write and had long been fascinated with medicine, so he figured “what the heck?” With no relevant experience or creative portfolio to speak of, he was initially offered a job as an account executive. Nothing against all the wonderful account people out there, but Mike knew that simply wasn’t for him and he continued to press for the copy position. Eventually the agency relented and the rest is history. A few years later, he started at Harrison and Star, where he has remained for 11 years and currently serves as Senior Creative Director. Along the way, Mike has gained experience in a number of specialty disease categories with a particular focus on oncology. He values work that speaks to physicians both as professionals and as people—work that stands out and that stimulates both a rational and emotional reaction.
